In 1898, Marie and Pierre Curie presented to the scientific world the discovery of two new chemical elements, polonium and radium. With their research, Pierre, in particular, found that radiation could kill diseased tissue cells. That is, he began the study of radiotherapy.

As we have seen, radium is a chemical element with symbol Ra, an atomic number 88 with an atomic mass of 226 u, and belongs to the family of alkaline earth metals, group 2 or IIA of the periodic classification of elements. At room temperature, radium is in a solid state.

Ra is also one of the names of the Egyptian sun god, Ra. One that heats and provides energy.

A fresh announcement just made to the Academy of Sciences in Paris by Monsieur Curie, co-discoverer with his wife of the most extraordinary of all chemical elements, radium, brings the wonderful properties of that substance once more to public attention. Radium, whose existence as an independent element was finally demonstrated last year, presents about the greatest puzzle with which science has to deal.
